This is a critical stage in our bargaining process. As in the past, we will do everything possible to achieve an agreement without a strike. Over the decades, we’ve seen time and again that when bargaining is tough, the only thing that gets Canada Post Corporation (CPC) moving is a powerful strike mandate – it’s where our bargaining power really comes from. Still, if we have not reached agreements by September 26, 2018, we will have to be ready for some type of job action. In striking down the back-to-work legislation of 2012, Justice Firestone found that our right to strike is protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Therefore, management will have to negotiate. This time, they can’t sit back and wait for back-to-work legislation to impose their rollbacks.

After two frustrating months of “intense negotiations”, none of our major demands have been the object of an agreement in principle. It seems to us that CPC is just stalling… Here are a few of our demands that have been the focus of discussion for the past months.

Every attempt, by us, to intensify these negotiations has been frustrated by Canada Post and therefore little or no progress has been made towards achieving our major demands. A small, but dedicated group of members in Quebec, led by Richard Martin, President of the CUPW local in Vaudreuil-Dorion, and Audrey Pepin, Vice-President, Quebec, have come together to mobilise the membership in the province. The group, made up of some of the most active and organised people from across the province, wants to inspire members to take action in their own locals and communities, and remind them that local events can have just as much of an impact as a rally on Parliament Hill.

On Friday, July 6, the Union received the notices confirming the start of conciliation for the Urban and RSMC bargaining units. These notices also confirm the appointment of two conciliators, one of whom is the director of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. The two conciliators will work with both bargaining units.

Canada Post refuses real negotiations and ignores the concerns of workers, who provide quality public service. The Fredericton Oromocto Local has used today to illustrate the Solidarity in their Local. During conciliation Locals must use their collective strength to convince the government to negotiate today’s problems and our future. Thanks to the membership of the Fredericton Oromocto Local and Brother Nickerson , their Local President.

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition
Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

Since the National Executive Board unanimously approved Building Worker Power in August, we’ve worked diligently to put it into action. Our first major step was selecting Regional Organizers who will establish a trained and responsive internal organizing structure in each region. We thank the many members that applied to offer their considerable strengths and skills to the campaign and look forward to building up our capacity to fight the boss, together.

During the 2018 round of bargaining, CUPW and the employer signed a Memorandum of Agreement to establish a committee to review the collective agreement articles concerning Groups 3 and 4. Unfortunately, the project was placed on hold due to the pandemic.

In early July of this year, Canada Post approached the Union with a slip, trip and fall pilot project. The pilot project would use an American based company that provides a slip, trip and fall simulator. On August 2, 2022, Union representatives from the Local, Regional and National offices visited the Windsor Depot to review, experience and evaluate the simulator.

Fuel cost along with all other incurred expenses for RSMCs have been rising consistently all year. The cost of fuel alone has risen by 40 percent since December 2021.
RSMCs receive money from Canada Post to pay for the use of their vehicles at a rate set by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). That amount is updated yearly and was last updated at the start of 2022 based on prices from November 2021. With this sudden increase in inflation, including the cost of gas, the math no longer makes sense.

CUPW is currently seeking eight members to assist with the 'Building Worker Power' campaign as a Regional Organizer (RO).
Starting September 2022, anyone appointed as a RO will be tasked with collaborating with the 3rd National Vice-President, their Regional office, and the Locals within their region, to travel between locals to help empower our work-floors, revitalize our membership, and help our union regain its fighting spirit!

For those I haven’t yet had the pleasure of meeting, my name is Roland Schmidt and I was elected as your new 3rd National Vice-President (Organizing) this past May. Before my election, I was serving my 2nd term as the Local President of CUPW 730 (Edmonton and affiliates) in Alberta. Since relocating to Ottawa in June, I’ve dedicated my efforts to stabilizing our organizing department and constructing a comprehensive strategic plan that, with broad member support, will revitalize our union and position us to effectively fight to make our jobs better.
