A crucial part of Canada Post’s mandate as a Crown Corporation is financial self-sufficiency. Since it was founded in 1981, it has had more profitable years than losses and paid millions in taxes and dividends. But the industry has changed, and the decline in letter mail continues year after year. The letter mail monopoly no longer pays the bills.

Back-to-work legislation is always an infringement of workers’ rights --
Hearings are now concluded in the Ontario Superior Court on our constitutional challenge to the 2018 back to work legislation. CUPW leaders, activists, and our legal counsel worked hard and presented a strong case before Judge Edward Morgan to have the legislation declared unconstitutional and defend our free collective bargaining rights.

As always, trying to address all the issues our members face is taking time. The longer bargaining continues, the easier it is for rumours and misinformation to start spreading on the workfloor and on social media. Much of the gossip starts with management. Don’t fall into the trap!

The National Day of Mourning, observed annually in Canada on April 28, pays tribute to those who have lost their lives, been injured, become ill or suffered tragedy at work. It’s a day to remember those who have suffered because of their work. It’s also a day to renew our collective commitment to improving workplace health and safety, and to preventing further injuries, illnesses, and deaths. This year’s theme is “Safe Work Now!”

CUPW represents more than 55,000 workers across the country, the majority of which work for Canada Post as letter carriers, rural and suburban mail carriers, postal clerks, mail handlers and despatchers, technicians, mechanics, and electricians. We also represent couriers, delivery drivers, warehouse workers, cleaners, emergency medical dispatchers and other private sector workers.

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition
Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

OTTAWA - Today, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers will continue to present its case during two days of hearings at the Industrial Inquiry Commission in Ottawa.

On February 19 and 20, the second round of hearings of the Industrial Inquiry Commission will be held in Ottawa.
The format for these hearings will be similar to the first. Commissioner Kaplan has asked both CUPW and Canada Post to provide him with written submissions before the hearings begin.

During the last convention, the Regional Internal Organizing Committees were formalized as per clause 4.15 of the National Constitution, with a mandate to, among other things, promote the benefits of organizing by developing materials and tools that facilitate work floor mobilization and to identify effective actions in the continued fight for worker rights.
