In Solidarity With People From A Mighty Continent: CUPW Honours Asian and South Asian Heritage Month

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers notes that May has been designated Asian Heritage Month by the federal government. May is also Asian and South Asian Heritage Month in Ontario.

Asia is a huge and diverse continent, and the term “Asian” refers to many different people and cultures. The term “South Asian” groups people originating from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, while “Asian” can include China, Hong Kong, Japan, Mongolia, North and South Korea, Taiwan, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. 

Workers with backgrounds from these countries, including both Canadian citizens and immigrant workers, have made priceless contributions to Canada and to our labour movements. In so doing, they have often suffered racist discrimination and prejudice, exploitation, and economic and social barriers. One example among many is the fight of Filipina caregivers against oppressive working conditions.

Our Union is extremely proud to have so many members of Asian and South Asian heritage active on our work floors and in our Locals across the country. Our Asian and South Asian Sisters and Brothers are part of our Union family and we welcome their participation at all levels of CUPW.
