On Wednesday, October 3, 2018, we received counter proposals from Canada Post for both the RSMC and Urban Operations bargaining units. These proposals contain a large amount of information and your negotiating committee is working diligently to analyze this information. We will be putting out a more detailed bulletin shortly.

Meetings held on September 29 and 30 between Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) officers and top executives of Canada Post Corporation (CPC) were interesting, but the impact on bargaining is unknown at this time.

[CUPW Translation] - 1. INTRODUCTION - [1] In the present case, I issued my first arbitration award on May 31, 2018. I then ruled on several issues in dispute, including the comparator group for rural and suburban mail carriers ("RSMCs") and permanent relief employees ("PREs"), namely the letter carrier group. It was also decided that these jobs are of equal value.[1]

In 2009, when Canada Post began introducing Postal Transformation, management proclaimed that the new work methods would result in a dramatic reduction in injuries. For many years CPC management congratulated itself for injury reduction and rewarded themselves with financial bonuses while hiding the fact that injuries to letter carriers actually increased.

The CUPW National Executive Board (NEB) has decided not to file a 72-hour strike notice for now. The NEB has decided to give Canada Post an opportunity to finally address our demands. We are still determined to achieve the collective agreements that you deserve.

Statement of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers on the final decision of Arbitrator Maureen Flynn on pay equity – For Immediate Release – Ottawa – Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers (RSMC) have finally won their long battle for pay equity. Arbitrator Flynn’s final decision confirms that Canada Post must put an end to the economic injustice faced by RSMCs. “After years of struggle, we are happy to finally have the recognition that there was a profound injustice at Canada Post,” said Nancy Beauchamp, member of the Pay Equity Committee.

Support Postal Banking - Download and Sign the Petition
Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

10 Days of Action to Protect the Vision of $10 Dollar a Day Child Care for All -
In 2021, the Federal Liberal Government announced its $10 a day Child Care plan, with a commitment of creating 86,000 new public and non-profit Child Care spaces. The centrepiece of this Federal pledge is to spend $30 billion over five years to create a Canada-wide $10-a-day child-care system by 2026.

I am a Registered Early Childhood Educator, and I have over ten years of experience organizing and facilitating programs to meet the diverse needs of families. … Shellie says goodbye… It is with a heavy heart that I leave a job that has inspired me over the past nine years as the CUPW Child Care Coordinator. With the CUPW Child Care Fund in its 33rd year of operation we continue to work hard to achieve the Funds goal of supporting the Child Care needs of CUPW and Union of Postal Communications Employees (UPCE), members and their children.

On October 15, we received notice from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FCMS) that the Minister of Labour appointed two mediators to help us continue bargaining with Canada Post.
The two mediators appointed have already been working with us as “Conciliation Officers” since the start of the Conciliation process on August 13.

Today, the RSMC Negotiating Committee met with Canada Post to respond to the Corporation’s September 25 global offer.
Since the start of Negotiations, the Employer has told us that it does not want to change the company on the backs of its employees. But after reviewing the Corporation’s offer, we are not satisfied the Employer has lived up to its word.
