We all have known for six months that this day would come. Many CUPW members and their families have already made the difficult decision to send their children back to school in the coming weeks. For months, we have also known what would be required to keep everyone safe within the public education ecosystem. We applaud the heroic efforts of teachers and education workers, custodians, staff, bus drivers, progressive trustees and boards of education, boards of health and health care workers who are all doing their best – under extremely difficult circumstances – to get things ready for our children. Despite these efforts, many governments have simply not done enough to help ensure the best possible #SafeSeptember.

The National Executive Board, at its August 18 to 21, 2020 meeting discussed the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on meetings stipulated in the National Constitution. Taken into consideration were health and safety concerns and provincial and federal restrictions imposed on travel and gathering sizes.

OTTAWA – Foodora couriers across the country will receive a $3.46 M settlement after the company filed for bankruptcy and shut down its Canadian operations in April of this year. The settlement was finalized by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) and Delivery Hero, the parent company for Foodora Canada.

After years of sometimes-contentious negotiations, the members of the Ottawa bargaining unit have a new contract. Tforce Logistics Canada Inc. is a same-day and overnight courier company. CUPW represents TForce workers in six different bargaining units across the country and we gave notice to bargain in December 2017. The Ottawa bargaining unit was the last to get a contract as the employer refused to engage in any meaningful negotiations with the Ottawa workers and CUPW.

The Trump White House is attacking the United States Postal Service, in a vicious combination of voter suppression efforts and a radical privatization agenda. A new Trump-appointed Postmaster General, Louis DeJoy, has cleaned house in the USPS executive and reorganized the service rapidly. The President himself confirmed last week that his withholding of stimulus funding for the public service will probably create delays that would undermine, or make impossible, mail-in voting. In the pandemic, voting by mail will be more vital than ever.

Representing the over 55,000 members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, we salute again the remarkable humanitarian solidarity exhibited by scores of Cuban medical workers serving humanity selflessly all over the planet. For over 60 years, Cuban medical brigades have provided care to some of the most marginalized with altruistic humanity. In particular, we recognize the Henry Reeve Contingent founded by late President of the Cuban Republic, Fidel Castro Ruz “with the purpose of saving lives in times of disasters, epidemics, pandemic and other events that require Cuban medical and paramedical health.”

The new Collective Agreements imposed by Arbitrator MacPherson address some of our concerns, but also leave some major issues unresolved. This award is a great example of how we cannot resolve our issues with compulsory arbitration. We need free collective bargaining and the right to strike. These rights have always been the power behind our major contractual gains.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers, representing 56,300 members condemns the in-custody execution of Soleiman Faqiri and joins the call for full transparency, accountability, and justice for his family. Mr. Faqiri, a man with schizophrenia, loved and supported by his family, and deserving of and requiring medical attention, was placed in segregation where he was brutally beaten and tortured. He was shackled and pepper sprayed with at least six armed guards present. That Mr. Faqiri was beaten is not in dispute. That he is dead as a result isn’t either. A coroner’s report revealed more than 50 signs of “blunt impact trauma” on his body, including on his neck, at the time of his death.

Canada needs a postal bank. Thousands of rural towns and villages in our country do not have a bank, but many of them have a post office that could provide financial services. As well, nearly two million Canadians desperately need an alternative to payday lenders. A postal bank could be that alternative. Download and sign the petition urging the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to add postal banking, with a mandate for financial inclusion.

As per our previous bulletin, CUPW members continue to raise serious concerns about the email sign-up process being conducted by Canada Post on behalf of the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB). According to the CIRB, this is being done: “To ensure receipt of your PIN necessary to vote, by email, the Board is requesting that everyone update their email address... The deadline to update your email address is Monday, July 7, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. (ET).” The Union has asked for an extension, but we do not yet know if one will be granted. We are concerned that Canada Post is focused on speed rather than ensuring members get access to vote.

CUPW members have always had a voice. Canada Post is acting like you don’t by saying this vote provides you with an opportunity to have a voice. But this forced vote is an attack against CUPW’s right and ability to represent you and it violates our long-standing democratic processes that were created by CUPW members just like you.

Yesterday July 2, hearings for our unfair labour practice complaint against Canada Post started at the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB). Hearings continued today, July 3. Our complaint is under sections 94 (1) and 97 (1) of the Canada Labour Code. Yesterday, we brought evidence to the CIRB to show that Canada Post has chosen to bargain directly with members and undermine the Union’s exclusive bargaining rights, all while trying to discredit the Union’s reputation.

On June 30 1981, CUPW members from sea to sea to sea went on a nationwide strike. One of the main issues in the strike was a maternity leave top up –or paid maternity leave so that women would not lose money when they took leave to have children.

We have received a number of concerns from members who are trying to update their email addresses for the so-called final offer vote. It has only been one day since we received that directive from the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB).

As you are aware, on June 12th, 2025, the Minister of Jobs and Families ordered the conduct of a vote on Canada Post’s final offers from May 28th, 2025 for the Urban and RSMC bargaining units and has directed that the CIRB be in charge of conducting said votes.

Canada Post intends to attack our job security in upcoming rounds of bargaining. They made this crystal clear in their submissions to the Industrial Inquiry Commission (IIC) chaired by William Kaplan. They are actively rolling out automation at work sites.

Canada Post says its wage offer provides for a pay increase of 6% in the first year followed by increases of 3%, 2% and 2% in subsequent years. CUPW says CPC’s offer for the first year does not come close to being a pay increase of 6%. Who is telling the truth?

Today, June 20th, 2025, we had our first meeting with the Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) to discuss details of the upcoming government-imposed vote on Canada Post’s May 28th, 2025 final offers for both postal bargaining units. The meeting was virtual and hosted by the CIRB and lasted about one and a half hours. This meeting was scheduled for preliminary discussions to address some aspects of the process regarding the way the vote would be conducted. The subject identified by the CIRB to be on the agenda were as follows

In its efforts to convince postal workers to accept its so called “best and final offer”, Canada Post claims to have dropped many of its original proposals for rollbacks. It says it no longer has plans to put all new employees on defined contribution pensions. It says its proposals will not end route ownership for letter carriers and RSMCs. It says it is not attacking job security. It even says it is no longer demanding higher premiums for retiree benefits. What it does not say is that it has plans to bring every one of these rollbacks back to the negotiating table.
