CUPW Child Care Fund
Children playing at a table with blocks while a care giver gives encouragement.

CUPW is one of a very few unions that has negotiated a Child Care Fund to help its members with their child care needs. And we use a unique and progressive approach. Today the Child Care Fund supports eight child care projects in different regions of the country and two national projects to support members who have children or adult sons and daughters with disabilities.

Provides help to the families of children (0 to 18 years) with special needs or disabilities.

  • Financial help is provided to reduce the higher cost of appropriate child care and other related services.
  • Personal support by phone from a Special Needs Advisor

If you have a child with special needs, or would like more information contact the Special Needs project at:

Toll-free phone number: 1-800-840-5465
E-mail: info@specialneedsproject.ca
Website: www.specialneedsproject.ca

Provides help to the families of adult children (18 and over) with disabilities.

  • Special Needs Advisor familiar with resources and services for adults in each province
  • Funding for members whose adult children are dependent on their parents for care. Use of funds may include additional expenses such as respite, supervision of adult child, life skills training, transportation, tutoring and uninsured heath expenses.

If you have an adult son or daughter with special needs or a disability, or would like more information contact the Moving On project at:

In addition to our two large national projects for members who have children with special needs or disabilities, the CUPW Child Care Fund works with eight community-based child care partners across Canada and Québec to support CUPW parents with children aged 0 to 12. Working with community partners means the union can help its members balance work and family responsibilities by supporting access to high-quality, regulated child care.

Building Robust Child Care Systems: International Perspectives

Thursday November 7 2019
Monday November 4 2019
We talked to Petter, a young father of a two-year old son, who works at the Posten parcel sorting terminal in Oslo about what it’s like to be a working parent in Norway. He and his partner applied for a place in a public kindergarten (child care centre) when his son was born and had a place for him at 11-months old. He was able to change his work hours so he could do the morning drop-off and his partner the evening pick-up. He indicated, they were fortunate to have a supportive employer and a system that is there when we needed it.

What could the children at the Ilebrekke child care centre be getting ready for? Over the last month the children have been engaged in a project to explore the work of contemporary Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama (famous for her polka-dot installations).

We just attended the International Centre for Early Childhood Education and Care conference (agenda: http://bit.ly/2JifzAs) in Berlin where inequality in access to ECEC was discussed from many points of view. It was a great way to begin our “Building Robust Child Care Systems,” a 2-year research project to learn how select countries have been working to build comprehensive, quality, affordable child care systems that meet families’ needs.
